Maja Willi
Maja Willi was born in Berlin in 2003 and began playing the violin at the age of six. She was accepted into the support programme of the Zurich Conservatory Music School (MKZ) in 2014, where she was taught by Barbara Bolliger until 2020.
At the Swiss Youth Music Competition, Maja Willi was awarded first prizes both as a soloist and in duo, and was a finalist for the City of Zurich’s Promotion Prize in 2018 and 2019. In 2019 she received the Youth Classics sponsorship prize at the Zurich Music Competition. She has performed as a soloist with the MKZ Chamber Orchestra and the Budweis Philharmonic Orchestra. She was concertmaster of the MKZ Chamber Orchestra and the Zurich Youth Symphony Orchestra, which toured South Korea in 2022 and performed at the Lotte Concert Hall in Seoul, among other venues.
The fascination for the diversity of sounds led Maja to improvisationally illustrate abstract art with the violin as part of an exhibition of works from the collection of Sybil Albers (Gallery Mark Müller, 2021, Zurich).
The violinist has been receiving lessons from Barbara Doll since 2020 and is currently in the second year of her Bachelor’s degree at the Hochschule für Musik Basel. Maja received enriching impulses in master classes with György Pauk, Dora Schwarzberg, Boris Brovtsyn, Alf Richard Kraggerud, Gyula Stuller and Rudens Turku, among others.
Maja Willi plays chamber music with enthusiasm in various formations. She is participating in this year’s Wolfegg Winter Music.
She is a scholarship holder of the Friedl Wald Foundation, the Kupper Foundation and the Rahn Kulturfonds.
