Nikolay Shugaev was born in Moscow in 1988 and began playing the cello at the age of five. At the age of 13 he won the first prize in the competition for young Russian cellists thanks to his extraordinary talent, which was soon followed by further prizes. He studied at the Gnessin School and the Moscow State Conservatory and with Robert Cohen and Enrico Dindo at the Conservatorio della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, where he graduated with distinction.
Nikolay Shugaev performs as a soloist with the state symphony orchestras in Russia and internationally in recitals. As a chamber musician he plays with his SPIEGEL trio in the Verdi Hall in Milan and at the Lucerne Festival in 2017, among others, and has appearances with violinists Massimo Quarta and Sergey Krylov, cellist Enrico Dindo and pianists Fatima Alieva, Andrei Gugnin and Fazil Say.
Since 2017 Nikolay Shugaev holds a position of the deputy artistic director of Habana Classica festival.
He is a professor at the Accademia di Musica di Erba.
As a Rahn Kulturfonds scholarship holder, Nikolay Shugaev played for two years a violoncello by violin maker Michael Stürzenhofecker, on loan from the Rahn Kulturfonds.
The board of trustees of the Rahn Kulturfonds meets twice a year and will consider all fully completed applications received.

The Rahn Kulturfonds supports requests regarding a contribution to the performance fees if:
- it is a project with or by Rahn Kulturfonds prize winners.
- it is a project with Rahn Kulturfonds scholarship holders.
The Rahn Kulturfonds supports its prize winners and scholarship holders during four years after receiving the award.
